SafeSpace Nest: The classroom regulation pod that adapts as needs change

Keep support in the classroom

One of the biggest challenges with traditional regulation spaces is their location.

When a pupil needs time away from the main classroom environment, they may need to leave the room – often accompanied by a Teaching Assistant or other member of staff.

SafeSpace Nest has been designed differently.

By creating a dedicated regulation space within the classroom, a pupil can step away from the immediate sensory demands of the learning environment while remaining connected to their teacher, support staff and classmates.

For schools, this can mean the Teaching Assistant remains available within the classroom rather than having to accompany a pupil to a separate regulation room elsewhere in the building.

The pupil gets the space they need. The classroom keeps the support it needs.

SafeSpace Nest is a flexible, classroom-based regulation and intervention pod designed to help pupils access the space they need – without removing them, or their support, from the classroom environment.

Developed in partnership with the school organisation team at Newcastle City Council, SafeSpace Nest can change its footprint in seconds, giving schools a compact regulation space when nested and a larger intervention or supported learning space when expanded.

The result is one adaptable SafeSpace that can support different pupils, different activities and changing needs throughout the school day.

Nested. Expanded. Relocated. Reused.

Designed around real classrooms

SafeSpace Nest hasn't been developed as a standalone piece of sensory furniture and then adapted for education.

It has been designed around the practical realities of schools.

That means considering classroom floor space, staffing, accessibility, relocation, durability and the fact that the needs of pupils – and schools – change over time.

The nesting design allows schools to create additional space when they need it without permanently giving up a large area of the classroom.

One pod. Two footprints.

SafeSpace Nest uses an innovative nesting design that allows the pod to change size according to how it is being used.

Nested – a personal regulation space

In its compact configuration, SafeSpace Nest provides a dedicated space where a pupil can regulate, reset or take some time away from the wider classroom environment.

It can incorporate features such as a desk, acoustic surfaces, graphics and sensory elements to create a space appropriate for the individual pupil and setting.

Expanded – space for supported intervention

When additional room is needed, the outer section of the pod can be extended to create a larger internal space.

This allows a Teaching Assistant, teacher or other professional to join the pupil for supported learning, intervention work, conversation or regulation activities.

Once the session is complete, the pod can be returned to its compact footprint.

Supporting the principles of Inclusive Education Estates

‍SafeSpace Nest has been designed to support the principles set out in the Department for Education’s Inclusive Education Estates guidance, which considers how education environments can better support children and young people with SEND.

By creating a flexible regulation and intervention space within the classroom, SafeSpace Nest can help schools provide adaptable, inclusive environments without automatically separating pupils from their wider learning community.

Its adjustable footprint and ability to be relocated also mean the space can evolve as pupil needs, classroom layouts and SEND provision change over time.

Read the Department for Education’s Inclusive Education Estates guidance.

Move it when needs change

A SafeSpace shouldn't become redundant simply because a classroom changes use or the pupil it was originally designed for moves on.

SafeSpace Nest can incorporate our patent-pending Raise&Relocate™ technology, allowing the pod to be raised onto integrated castors and moved when required.

It has also been designed so that, in its moving configuration, it can pass through standard school doorways.

This means a SafeSpace Nest installed in one classroom today could be relocated elsewhere in the school in the future.

No dismantling the pod into dozens of components. No major building works. No assumption that the space will always be needed in exactly the same place.

Needs change. SafeSpace Nest can change with them.

Built for years, not terms

SafeSpace Nest is manufactured by AgileAcoustics in our West Yorkshire workshop and engineered as a long-term piece of educational furniture.

Rather than being a temporary tent, booth or lightweight enclosure, it is designed to withstand the demands of everyday school environments and potentially be reused by different pupils and in different classrooms over many years.

Its flexibility is an important part of that longevity.

As pupils, cohorts, classrooms and SEND requirements change, the pod can be reconfigured, relocated and repurposed rather than replaced.

Make the SafeSpace their space

Every pupil is different, so SafeSpace Nest doesn't need to look the same in every school.

The pod can be personalised using graphics and finishes to create an environment appropriate to the pupil or setting – from calming colours and nature scenes to maps, educational graphics or completely bespoke designs.

Designed with schools, not just for schools

SafeSpace Nest has been developed in partnership with the school team at Newcastle City Council, building on AgileAcoustics' experience designing and manufacturing acoustic and SafeSpace pods for education environments.

Feedback from education professionals has directly influenced the development of the product – from its changing footprint and classroom-based approach to practical details around desks, movement, locking and relocation.

The objective is simple:

Create a SafeSpace that works around the realities of teaching, rather than asking teaching to work around the SafeSpace.

A SafeSpace that evolves with your school

SafeSpace Nest isn't designed around one pupil, one classroom or one moment in time.

It's designed around change.

A quiet regulation space in the morning. A supported intervention space in the afternoon. A different pupil next year. A different classroom in three years' time.

One SafeSpace. More possibilities.
