Introducing SafeSpace Fold: The SEN Safe Space That Can Move With The Child
Date 01.07.2026 Author: Stuart Jones
Schools are under increasing pressure to create supportive environments for pupils with additional needs, whilst making the very best use of limited space and budgets.
For many schools, a dedicated Safe Space or sensory area can make a life-changing difference to a child's ability to self-regulate, reduce anxiety and remain engaged with learning.
But there is often a challenge.
Children move.
Classrooms move.
Needs change.
And traditional fixed Safe Spaces rarely move with them.
Supporting Inclusion Inside the Classroom
One of the most encouraging pieces of feedback we have received on the concept came from a local authority school design team.
Their view was simple:
"We see this working inside classrooms, which gives the pupil their own space but remains in the learning environment and can still have that connection with the teacher and friends in the classroom."
This is a powerful idea.
Many pupils do not necessarily need to leave the classroom environment entirely. They simply need a calm, predictable space where they can regulate emotions, reduce sensory overload or take a short break before re-engaging.
SafeSpace Fold could provide that refuge whilst helping maintain connection to learning, staff and peers.
Designed For Existing Schools
Many school buildings were never designed with dedicated wellbeing spaces in mind.
Creating new rooms often requires building work, planning, disruption and significant cost.
SafeSpace Fold has been conceived specifically for existing school environments.
The folding design allows the pod to pass through standard internal doorways, helping schools reposition it between classrooms, year groups and departments without major building alterations.
Combined with our patent-pending Raise&Relocate technology, the pod can be lifted slightly off the floor, moved into position and then lowered back down to maintain accessibility.
One Investment, Multiple Applications
We believe schools increasingly need solutions that can adapt over time.
SafeSpace Fold could be used as:
A classroom calm space
A SEND support area
A sensory retreat
A nurture room extension
A wellbeing space
A quiet reading zone
A temporary intervention space
Rather than designing spaces around a fixed pod, schools could adapt the pod around changing needs.
Looking Ahead
SafeSpace Fold is currently a concept under development, and we are working closely with schools, SEND professionals and local authority partners to gather feedback.
As with many of our innovations, the best ideas often come directly from the challenges schools share with us every day.
Our goal is simple:
To help schools create supportive environments that are flexible, inclusive and capable of adapting as children's needs evolve.
Because sometimes the best Safe Space is the one that can move when the child does.
